Title: Continued fractions and the Four Color Theorem
Abstract: In this talk I’ll consider the Four Color Theorem from a (well-known) geometric point of view involving simplicial maps from a triangulation to a tetrahedron. I’ll explain why understanding these maps for triangulations with non-negative combinatorial curvature is an attractive problem, and I’ll show some solutions I discovered, in a very special case, that give a novel geometric interpretation of continued fractions. I’ll illustrate the ideas in the talk with pretty computer demos, one of which is practically hypnotic.
