Title: The Inverse Scattering Transform for Maxwell-Bloch systems with inhomogeneous broadening
Abstract: In this talk, I will start by reviewing the Inverse Scattering Transform as a method to solve the initial-value problem for a class of nonlinear integrable PDEs, and then present its application to the Maxwell-Bloch system of equations describing two-level systems with inhomogeneous broadening. After exposing the general ideas in the case of rapidly decaying optical pulses, I will also briefly discuss our recent results for the case of optical pulses that do not vanish at infinity in the distant future, and describe the asymptotic state of the medium and of the optical pulse.
