Title: Microstructure evolution models in Materials Science and Engineering
Abstract: In this presentation, I will discuss the motivation and derivation of phase-field type models for microstructure evolution in materials science. Once the derivation of the models has been described, we will examine some applications to solidification processes and bubble dynamics of nuclear fuel materials. We will then discuss a recent phase-field formulation for consistent pressure and density behaviour in materials, most evident in the physics occurring at the nanoscale. I will discuss the salient features of the model and its derivation in the grand potential ensemble. We will end the presentation by discussing the derivation of an atomistic-level phase-field formulation, the so-called phase-field crystal model, for microstructure evolution.
