Title: More than just adding women: Rethinking mathematics for gender inclusion
Abstract: Why are 50% of undergraduates, 30% of graduate students, and 17% of tenured professors in math women? Why are women with the same academic records as men in math half as likely to continue? Why do students rate the knowledge of women instructors lower than their male instructors, even during online instructor when all they have is a male or female name? In this talk, I will present research from social scientists and humanities scholars that demonstrates the gender disparity in mathematics is not simply a pipeline problem. I will argue that we, as an academic mathematics community, need to intentionally make fundamental changes in the way we approach and communicate mathematics if we want to be a place for more people to thrive.
