Title: Optimal design of responsive structures
Abstract: We investigate the systematic design of compliant morphing or responsive structures composed of both responsive and non-responsive materials through topology optimization. We employ the perimeter penalization method to ensure well-posedness of the topology optimization. By applying the phase-field approach, we establish the existence of an optimal design using the well-known Monica-Mortola Theorem. We study numerical results for the design of a 2D rectangular beam with least square objective function and discuss some intuition behind the features of the converged designs.
