Mike Cummings Research CV

Mike Cummings

I am a master's student in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at McMaster University. My supervisor is Jenna Rajchgot.

In Fall 2024, I will be starting a PhD in the Department of Combinatorics and Optimization at the University of Waterloo.

Research

My research studies commutative algebraic/algebro-geometric objects using computational and combinatorial tools. Recently, I have been using geometric vertex decomposition and Frobenius splitting to study Hessenberg varieties, toric ideals of graphs, and matrix Schubert varieties.

I am partially supported by an Ontario Graduate Scholarship, a Bernhard Banashewski OGS, and a Milos Novotny Fellowship.

Teaching

In Winter 2024 I am the TA for Theory of Linear Algebra – Math 2R03. During Summer 2024, I am teaching Applications of Linear Algebra – Math 2LA3.

Extras

With Justin Gebel, Dicle Mutlu, and Adele Padgett, I co-organize McMaster's Casual Math Seminar. Outside of Hamilton Hall, I am in the pit band of the McMaster Engineering Musical.
