MATH 4L03 Final Exam
Information
Date
and Location:
- The
MATH 4L03 final exam will be held on Monday, December 9
from 9:00am to 11:30am.
- This exam
will be held in person, on campus in Hamilton Hall, Room
102.
- If you have
arranged for an accommodation with Student Accessibility Services,
please log into the SAS student portal to find details about the
scheduling and location of your exam.
What to
do on the day of the exam:
- If you are
not able to write the exam, please contact Dr.
Valeriote (matt@math.mcmaster.ca)
as soon as possible. You should also
contact the Associate Dean's Office. Note that students who do
not write the exam as scheduled can request a deferral. If
granted, the MATH 4L03 deferred exam can be written, sometime this
winter, as scheduled by the registrar.
- What
to bring with you:
- Your
McMaster ID card,
- Pencils, pens, maybe a
ruler, and an eraser.
- No aids will
be allowed during the exam. You
may not use lecture notes, textbooks, laptops
or cell phones during the exam.
- You will write all of your solutions on the examination
booklet provided.
What
material the exam will cover:
- You
should know the definitions of the concepts introduced in the
course, along with the statements and proofs of the theorems,
lemmas, and corollaries covered.
- The
test will cover material from the course up to and including the
material found in Section 6.4 of the course textbook.
- Specifically,
it will cover material from the following sections: 2.1, 2.2,
2.3, 2.4, 2.6, 3.1, 3.2, 3.3, 4.1, 4.2, 4.3, 4.4, 5.1, 5.2, 5.3,
5.5, 6.1, 6.2, 6.3, and 6.4.
- You
do not need to have detailed information about any particular axiom
system that is covered in Section 4.4 (but having an understanding
of them could be helpful), but you should understand the discussion
of the various types of orderings that were covered in class and
also know what an equivalence relation is.
- You
will not be tested on material from these sections that were not
discussed in the lectures.
- You
do not need to memorize the details of the proof system for
first-order logic presented in class. The exam paper will
contain a list of the axioms and rules of the system.
- The
style and format of the exam will be similar to that of the
midterm test, but there will be a lot of time to work on the exam
questions (7 questions out of 9 to be submitted).
How to
prepare for the exam:
- To prepare for the exam, you should look over the
relevant sections of the textbook, review your lecture notes, and
go over the assignment questions and solutions.
- In
addition, you should try to do a good number of questions from
each of the chapters of the text that have been covered in the
course.
- Review
the midterm test and its solution.
- On December
5, Dr. Valeriote will hold an office hour from 2:30 to 3:30pm (right
after class). He is also available by appointment.
