Questions

1.     The yield of a certain process with Catalyst A varies from one run to another; the mean is 0.83 and the standard deviation is 0.01. With Catalyst B the mean is 0.88 and the standard deviation is 0.02. If two independent runs are made, once with each catalyst, what is the probability that the run with Catalyst A will give a higher yield than the run with Catalyst B? State any assumptions you make.

2.     You have two coins; one is fair, the other has two heads. If you select one at random, toss it 3 times and get a head each time, what is the probability that it was the two-headed coin?

3.     Flaws occur in the interior of plastic used for automobiles according to a Poisson process with a mean of 0.02 flaws per panel. What is the probability that a given panel has one or more flaws? If 50 panels are inspected, what is the probability that at most 2 of them have one or more flaws?

  1. Define the following terms: parameter, statistic, sampling distribution.

  1. Write a brief note on Florence NightingaleÕs contributions to medical statistics and graphical data analysis.
