Title: The role of the strain in the Navier-Stokes regularity problem
Abstract: I will discuss the role of the strain in the evolution of the Navier-Stokes equation. I will discuss how the strain evolution equation can be used to prove an identity for enstrophy growth in terms of the determinant of the strain and a regularity criterion in terms of the positive part of the middle eigenvalue of the strain. I will also prove the existence of finite-time blowup for a toy model equation for the strain evolution equation, and discuss the relationship between blowup for this model equation and blowup for the full Navier-Stokes equation.
