Math 3Z03 Instructions
Assignments (30%)
- there will be five assignments (consisting of historical
and challenging problems)
- assignments will be posted on the course home page at
least one week before the due date. Due dates can be found on
the course home page.
- assignments will be collected in class by the instructor.
No late assignments will be accepted
Presentations and
Reports (40%)
Attendance and
Participation (10%)
- there will be two presentations for each student
- group work is allowed, but not more than two people in a
group - each group selects a topic approved by the instructor
and signs up for an oral presentation.
- a week after the oral presentation, each presenter must
submit a written report to the instructor in class
- each oral presentation is worth 10% and each report
10% of the final grade
- presentations should be 15 to 20 minutes in length
for each presenter; the remaining time is devoted to
discussion
- use blackboard for formulas and mathematical
explanations and the computer for pictures and graphics.
- presenters are evaluated for their presentation by other
students but mainly by the instructor
- attendance is compulsory: you are required to attend all
presentations and participate in the discussion
- keep your own
notes about other students' presentations; there will be
quizzes and you will be asked to evaluate the presentations..
Written report guidelines
- maximum number of pages is 10 (that includes all pages
and all pictures); double-space the text
- reports are individual, i.e. each group member writes
her/his report; reports belonging to the members of the same
group must be different (of course, some material (text,
formulas, etc.) will appear in both papers, but this should be
kept to a minimum)
- reports should contain more details than the oral
presentation, and should include a bibliography (you are
allowed to use internet sources, but at least three of the
references must be 'non-electronic literature' (books etc.)
Two Quizzes
(10%)
- There will be two
30-minute quizzes to be written in class. The short
questions (mostly true/false and multiple choice will be
based on both the material from the presentations and the
assignments.
Final report
(10%)
- An essay and a written
synopsis and evaluation of the course.
