WELCOME TO THE DEPARTMENT OF MATHEMATICS AND STATISTICS
Welcome to the Department of Mathematics & Statistics new website. In it you will find information on all of the many activities that the Department supports. If there is something that you would like to know about the Department but which you can't locate on our site, please send a message to us at: math@mcmaster.ca

We are one of the larger departments on campus, with 35 full-time faculty, 18 postdoctoral fellows, over 100 graduate students and 6 staff members. The Department has strong research groups in several areas of mathematics and statistics and we offer a number of different programs at the undergraduate and graduate levels. For example, we recently introduced an undergraduate programme in Actuarial and Financial Mathematics, and we offer a professional masters program in Financial Mathematics through M-Phimac.

Research seminars in Algebra & Number Theory, Analysis, Applied Mathematics, Finantial Mathematics, Geometry & Topology, Mathematical Logic and Probability & Statistics and the weekly Colloquium attract some of the world's most prominent mathematicians.  Each year the department invites a prestigious guest lecturer to deliver a series of talks, the Britton Lectures (endowed by a gift of Ronald and Helen Britton.)  The annual Evelyn Nelson Memorial Lecture commemorates our late colleague and features talks in the foundations of mathematics. Walter Craig 1953 - 2019

WC 2014

Walter Craig: Celebration of Life. Saturday 16 March 2019.  Livestreaming of the Celebration of Life - talk by Gene Wayne  and Remembering Walter

Walter Craig, one of Canada’s most accomplished and distinguished  mathematicians, passed away January 18th at the Juravinski Cancer Centre in Hamilton at  65 years of age.

Walter was recruited to Canada and McMaster University in 2000 as a Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Mathematical Analysis and its Applications, the very first appointment through the CRC program in the country. He was named Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada in 2007, Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in 2008 and was one of the inaugural group of Fellows of the American Mathematical Society named in 2013. He was awarded a Killam Fellowship in 2009.

In 2013, Walter was appointed Director of the Fields Institute, one of the world’s leading mathematics research institutes. He served in this capacity for two years, until he received the diagnosis of prostate cancer.

Walter created the Applied and Industrial Mathematics Lab at McMaster as a component  of his Canada Research Chair, and organized three year-long thematic programs at the Fields Institute during his 18 years in Canada. He was the driving force behind innumerable conferences and workshops around the world. Walter’s research enterprise included more than 100 articles published in top journals.

Walter was a valued colleague in McMaster’s Department of Mathematics and Statistics, where he also served as an exceptional mentor to many undergraduate and graduate students, postdoctoral fellows and young mathematicians. As an academic supervisor, he shared his passion and expertise in the field of partial differential equations and the study of infinite-dimensional Hamiltonian systems and nonlinear partial differential equations. His contributions while at McMaster were recognized with conferral of the title Distinguished University Professor in 2016.

Above all else, Walter was a devoted and loving husband to Deirdre Haskell and a proud father to Zoe Haskell-Craig.  Walter will be greatly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him as a mathematician, colleague and dear friend.

The Walter Craig Mathematics and Statistics Colloquium Fund  has been established to  support the colloquium series, which features speakers presenting current research in mathematics and statistics, and welcomes  faculty members, postdoctoral fellows and graduate students to discuss their subject in an informal setting.

Dr Lia Bronsard and Dr Miroslav Lovric named in Inaugural Class of Fellows of the Canadian Mathematics Society

Congratulations to Dr Lia Bronsard and Dr Miroslav Lovric who have been recognized by the Canadian Mathematics Society in the Inaugural Class of Fellows.

The Fellows Program was instituted to recognize mathematicians who have made very significant contributions to the profession and to the Canadian Mathematical Society. The Fellowship recognizes CMS members who have made excellent contributions to mathematical research, teaching, or exposition; as well as having distinguished themselves in serve to Canada’s mathematical community.

Induction to the Inaugural Class of Fellows was based upon CMS members who have been a recipient of a CMS prize or award for outstanding contributions for research, education, exposition or service to the Canadian mathematical community or to the CMS. The CMS Fellows Selection Committee will be responsible for the approval of future CMS Fellows.
