21 March 2013 Solutions to Midterm 2.

12 March 2013 Midterm 2, second attempt. Monday, March 18 5:45-6:45 pm in HH 302. Same material as first attempt. This exam mark will only be used if it increases your grade.  There will not be an early seating.

11 March 2013 Dear Students, all I can do is to apologise for this evening's fiasco. When Ben arrived at the room that I had booked for this evening's exam it was already occupied by another class taking an exam. He could not evict them, and I could not have done so either, even if I had been there. The exam will be moved to next week at the same time. I have a request in to Room Bookings to find a room, and I will be telling them to check repeatedly that the room is not double booked. The rescheduled exam will cover the same material as the cancelled exam. However, it will not be identical to the one that some people sat earlier today. With my deepest apologies,
       Yours sincerely,
               Dr. Deirdre Haskell

7 March 2013 Correction correction! The midterm on Monday is the same time as the first one; that is, 5:45-6:45 pm, otherwise known as 17:45-18:45.

5 March 2013 Practice midterm 2. Solutions will be posted shortly.

4 March 2013 Midterm 2 coming up! Monday, March 11, 18:45-19:45 in T28. The early seating is the same day at 1:30; send me an email if you have a reason to sit the exam early. Material covered is everything on WebAssign homeworks 4, 5 and 6. That is, in sections of the textbook: 8.1, 8.2, 9.1, 9.2, 9.3, 9.4, 9.5, 9.6, 10.1, 10.2, 10.3. There will be a review session on Thursday, March 7, 16:30-18:30 in BSB 106. A practice exam will be posted shortly.

30 January 2013 Maple lab 1 is now posted on the calendar below. In case you no longer have it, here is the handout written by Dr Lovric with a brief summary of how to use Maple.

28 January 2013 Midterm 1 is coming up on Monday February 4. The material covered is everything up to WebAssign 3. That is (in the order done during the semester) 7.2, 7.3 (with 7.1 a necessary technique), Appendix E, 5.1, 5.2, 5.3, (5.5 included automatically), 6.1, 6.2, 6.5, 7.8. A practice exam is posted here, with solutions to be posted shortly. There will be a review session on Thursday January 31, 4:30-6:30 in BSB 106, run by Ben. Also the tutorial on Monday Feb 4 will be a review for the midterm. For students with a scheduled conflict, there will be an early seating of the exam earlier the same day. Contact me by email immediately to arrange for the early seating.

16 January 2013 The course TA is Ben Goodman goodmb@math.mcmaster.ca, office hours in Math Help Centre are Thursday 3:30-6:30. My office hours are Monday 10:30-11:30, Tuesday 9:30-10:30, Thursday 1:20-2:30 in HH 316 (note the changed time on Thursdays).

1 January 2013 Welcome to Math 1XX3! The first week of class will be taught by Dr Lovric, who will finish off the work of Math 1X03 by covering some more techniques of integration (7.2 and 7.3). I will return (from a research conference in Germany) in time for the second week, at which point we will start on new material.

Required and recommended problems

A minimum amount of work to keep up with the course, is to do all of the required problems and labs, as well as all of the recommended problems. Probably you will need to do more than this. All odd-numbered problems from the text have worked solutions in the solutions manual, as well as brief solutions at the back of the book. The challenge problems are to encourage you to realise that there is more to the ideas we are working with than the calculations sometimes indicate. You are encouraged to discuss these problems with your colleagues, your TA and your instructor.

Books for the course

The course textbooks can be bought from Titles Bookstore. This is the same package that was used for Math 1X03 and also for Math 1A03/1ZA3.

Course objective

We continue the study of functions.
1) The definite integral, its relationship to antiderivatives, and applications.

2) Functions given by differential equations. An introduction to modelling and how to solve simple differential equations.

3) Using infinite series to represent functions. Understanding series and their convergence.

4) Functions of an implicit variable -- parametric curves.

See the course outline and calendar for more specific information.

Help available

Math Help Centre in HH104 M-R 14:30-20:30, F 14:30-18:30. Drop-in for help from TAs, or work on problems with other students. The Math Help Centre opens in the week of January 7, 2013.

Help with lab assignments: Some of the TAs in the Math Help Centre can help with the Maple Labs. Otherwise, plan to ask your instructor for help.

Teaching Assistants: The course TA will available in the math help centre at the hours posted above. You can also send an email, but remember that it is hard to explain math by email, so plan to come in and talk with them.

Instructor:  Feel free to attend the instructor's office hours and ask questions.

Assignment information

Enhanced WebAssign This is an online version of the textbook. In particular, it has an automated sytem for marking problems, which gives you immediate feedback on whether you are doing the problems correctly. There are three types of collections of problems:
To log into WebAssign, you will need to create an account using the access code that came with your textbook. In order for your marks to be recorded correctly, you must include your student ID number in the registration information. You will also need the following class key:

Maple Labs The Maple labs are designed to help you learn how to use Maple as a tool for doing mathematics. You will find Maple an incredibly useful tool for math and science courses  throughout your university career, and hopefully beyond! There are three lab assignments, and they are all required. No late assignments will  be accepted. Due dates are posted on the course calendar. Labs are to be handed in in class on the posted due date.
