Announcements

13 December 2017 Marks for the fall semester are posted here. The spreadsheet is sorted by the last five digits of student id number. The WebAssign mark was calculated using the best ten of the 12 assignments, the quiz mark was calculated using the best 4 of 5 quizzes and the homework mark was calculated using the best 3 of 4 written homeworks. Let me know if you think there are any mistakes. Enjoy your holidays.

13 December 2017 About twenty people have not yet chosen a topic for the essay. The following topics are no longer available: Fractals, Banach-Tarski Paradox, Russell's Paradox, Infinity, Non-euclidean geometry, Mathematical Epidemiology. Choose a topic from the remaining ones on the list (see post on Nov 13), let me know what you have chosen, and start looking at it over the holidays.

4 December 2017 Here are some suggested problems to help review for the final. They are chosen from the section called Review Exercises at the end of each chapter.
    Chapter 2 29, 39, 47
    Chapter 3 25, 69, 75, 89, 95
    Chapter 4 7, 15, 45, 63
    Chapter 5 9, 17, 25, 45
    Chapter 6 3, 7, 13
    Chapter 9 1, 9

3 December 2017 There are no tutorials this week (the Wed morning tutorial will not happen). The TAs will hold office hours on Thursday in Wilson 3038 seminar room with the following schedule: 12:30--2:00 Harrison, 1:45--3:15 Adrienne, 3:00-4:30 Marco.

3 December 2017 I have given everyone an extension on WA12 until Tuesday midnight (= Wed 8am with the automatic eight-hour leeway).
Here is the midyear exam I gave two years ago. Question 2 and one of the integrals in Question 6 use techniques of integration that we have not yet covered. In that year, the topic of diffferential equations was in the second semester. Here are the solutions.
I will have office hours on Thursday afternoon, 2:30--4:30. The TAs will also be holding office hours in the seminar room in LRW 3038, I think 12:30--4:30.

30 November 2017 Several people have asked me about what calculator will be allowed on the exam. At the beginning of the semester I filled in a form on which I said that the only calculator allowed is the McMaster standard Casio fx 991 MS . I have now been told that I cannot reverse that decision. So, sorry, but you will have to work out how to use the Casio. It will not be a calculator-heavy exam. Look up ahead of time how to calculate values of exponential, log, trig and inverse trig functions, and how to put the calculator into radian mode.

30 November 2017 One of the problems on the last WebAssign homework requires you to integrate the function ln(x) . We have not actually talked about how to do this (we will next semester). The general form of the antiderivative of ln(x) is xln(x) - x + C .

29 November 2017 Last WebAssign for the semester now posted!

26 November 2017 This week there is both a quiz and a homework assignment scheduled for tutorial. The homework assignment is cancelled. The quiz will be on Euler's method for approximating values of the solution to a first-order differential equation.

24 November 2017 The midterm for everybody will be in T13 123 on Friday at 11:30. Please leave extra time to find your way there.

20 November 2017 Here is a practice midterm to work on.

13 November 2017 This week's quiz is on antiderivatives. Here is the list of essay topics. Let me or your TA know which topic you want to write about.

3 November 2017 Class today (as you already know) will be regular class in the cycle of lectures. Next Friday is a guest lecture by Dr Earn. The following week, class on Thursday November 16 is cancelled. The Friday class on November 17 will be an introduction to the essay topics, given by Adrienne, Harrison and Marco.

8 October 2017 The midterm has been marked; the marks are posted here, in a file sorted by the last 4 digits of your student ID number. The exams will be returned in class after the break. If you got less than 20/30 on this exam, you should plan to talk to me about what you can do to improve your performance.

5 October 2017 Solutions to practice midterm.

3 October 2017 The midterm will be in KTH B132 (the usual Friday room) and KTH B124. Students with last names in the range A through L should go to KTH B132. Students with last names in the range M through Z should go to KTH B124.

3 October 2017 The next two WebAssign homeworks are now posted. Please note that the WebAssign homeworks are due on Mondays at midnight (with automatic extension to the following morning). The extension makes the date look like it is due on Tuesday, and I incorrectly put in the deadline for the first several assignments. This is corrected (I hope) for the subsequent assignments. if you need to communicate with me, please send email, not a message on WebAssign, which I do not look at very often.

2 October 2017 A practice version of Midterm 1 is posted here. This is intended as a study review and guideline to what to expect from the test. The actual test will NOT be the same questions just with the numbers changed. Solutions will be reviewed in tutorial.

29 September 2017 Midterm 1 is on Friday October 6 in class. It will cover everything we have done in chapters 2 and 3 (except epsilon-delta proofs of continuity). Check here for information about where you should go for the test.

29 September 2017 Starting with Homework #3 (the written homework) only one of the indicated problems will have to be handed in. I will indicate which one should be handed in. All of the problems will be discussed in tutorial. My intention is that this homework can be completed in the 24-hour period between your tutorial and the time it should be submitted.

17 September 2017 I hope that the first tutorial and the first written homework all went well. The topic for the first quiz is posted on the calendar below. The quiz will be very short (ten to fifteen minutes) and will leave plenty of time in tutorial to discuss what has been happening in class.

1 September 2017 Welcome to the 2017-18 academic year! if you have a little time this weekend, you can buy your textbook, register on WebAssign, and try out the review problems. If you do not manage to log into WebAssign, you can still try the review problems by looking at the Recommended Problems section below.

Calendar Entries in the calendar are subject to change. See the announcements section for updates.
