- Here is a practice final; this was last year's final. I
would suggest not looking at this test until you feel you have studied
all the material and done the practice problems. It contains 40
questions so give yourself 3 hours to do it. Here are solutions to the practice final.
- I will have office hours by appointment during the week of Dec. 8 and
additional office hours Monday, Dec. 15 10:30 - 12 and Wednesday, Dec. 17 10:30 - 12. You can also send
me email or arrange for an appointment. Matt will also have
office hours which I will post as soon as I know them. The help centre
is open every weekday from 2:30 - 6:30 during exams.
- There
is a review session Tuesday, Dec. 16, 2:30 - 4:30 in ITB AB 102; please
come prepared with questions or email them to me ahead of
time.
- NOTE:
the answer to question 4 on the test was D OR E; the tests
have been regraded and your score should reflect this change. I
will post revised solutions soon. On question 7, A or D are both
allowed due to a confusion with the wording; the tests have been
remarked to reflect this.
- Here is the second test and here are the solutions; the median on the test was 9.
- The second test is scheduled for Nov. 14 at 10:30 am (that is class time). The test will be 50 minutes.
- If your surname is in the range A - O then you will write the
test in T28/001 and if your surname is in the range P - Z you will
write in T29/101.
- The test will be multiple choice and you will need to bring an
HB pencil. You will be allowed to have the McMaster approved
Casio fx-991MS or MSplus but no other aids.
- Please bring your ID card with you to the test.
- The test
will cover sections 3.1 - 3.5, the parts of sections 5.1, 5.2 and 5.5
covered in class and complex numbers following sections 10.1 - 10.3 of
the 9th edition. In
addition to the practice problems listed on the lecture schedule page,
here is a selection of additional problems from the book:
- chapter 3,
supplementary problems: 1, 3, 7, 9, 21 (10th edition 1, 3, 9, 11, 13, 25);

Math 1B3. are the answers and here
are some written solutions - questions 6 and 9 are different on the
practice test which was posted - in both of these questions, the answer
is A.
- The
lecture, Wed. Nov. 12, will be review; please come prepared with
questions or send questions in advance regarding topics you wish
reviewed.
- Additionally, Matt
Luther will run a review session on Thursday, Nov. 13 from 5:30 - 7:30
in HH 302. Please come prepared with questions and/or send him
questions ahead of
time about things that you wish to have discussed.
- There will be no Friday morning tutorial on Nov. 14.
- For question #10 in assignment 3, the question asks you to find a
basis for a certain eigenspace; each answer gives you two vectors u and v.
The way you should answer this question is to decide, in the case of
the eignevalue 0, what the general form of the eigenvectors for 0 are
i.e. su + tv where s and t are scalars. Alternatively, you could ask which pair u and v are eigenvectors for the eigenvalue 0?
- Here is a copy of the first test and here are the solutions.
- The first test is scheduled for Oct. 10 at 10:30 am (that is class time). The test will be 50 minutes.
